The beginning of 2009 instantly becomes another adventure. There is a Measles outbreak in Chad (central Africa) and Medecins Sans Frontieres carries out a massive emergency vaccination campaign to immunize several tenthousands of children before the disease hits their villages. 2004 I had worked in Chad during the large refugee influx from Sudan. So I quickly travel back to N'Djamena and towards the Sudanese border where I coordinate the Logistics activities of the campaign - transport, communication, cold chain management. In early April time has come to return to Germany and continue with my cycling trip. There is still a lot of snow in the Alps. But it's melting!!!
After crossing the alps I head down to Naples via Milano, Ravenna, Bologna, Firenze and Rome. After that, Susan joins me to ride across Sardegna, Corsica and through the beautiful Piemont. We then follow the Mediterranean coast all the way down to Barcelona.
After that west-bound through the Pyrennes to Santiago de Compostella and then south through Portugal until Tarifa (Gibraltar). In 2010 we set across the Straight of Gibraltar to Morocco and follow the Atlantic coast. It takes 3 weeks to cross the Sahara desert into Mauretania. From here we head to Senegal and then 'Inshallah' across the Atlantic ocean to the Americas.
